Gonna be a Sassy night
SASSY, a household name in the music business, will perform at the 2024 Fiji Fringe Festival at the USP tonight.
Feeling happy and excited to be performing again in the country, Sassy says she’ll be doing a few sigidrigi numbers as well as pay homage to where her love for Fijian music began.
“I’ll be performing my originals and some sigidrigi to pay homage to my roots and to Fijian music,” she said.
“There’ll be a lot of guitar tunes, raw and organic music, and I’ll be showcasing my jazzy soul vocals as well.
So, why sigidrigi?
“Well, it’s because I’ve sat around the tanoa with my family and friends, so I wanted to do a little nod to that because that was how I came into the music industry in terms of Fijian music.
“I appreciated the story telling in that style of music and that has always been at the heart of my music in this industry.”
Sassy will be performing with special guests Big Wilz and talented guitarist Tux.
“So, like I said, it’ll be a semi-unplugged feel,” she said. “It’s mostly guitar and vocal-driven, so it’s going to be an intimate kind of audience vibe so there’ll be interactions between them and me.
“The audience is the reason that artists have a career in music because if you are disconnected from your audience, there’s nothing there.”
Sassy will also be selling her Lewa Strong merchandise, a Pasifika Violence Prevention movement primarily focused on family violence in Fijian communities around the world.
Sassy owns the Lewa Strong label and a fashion line that was launched last year at the Pacific Fusion Fashion Show in Auckland.
“Family violence is a big issue in our communities and it’s something we can’t keep ignoring.
“Speaking as a survivor, two out three women in Fiji experience violence from their partners, including rape.
“The movement is for everybody and it’s really to support our men to get the help they need and to empower our women as well to stand up for what they deserve.
“I’ll be dressed in my own Lewa Strong fashion line and I’ll be selling merchandise on the night.”
