Designer shares journey

IF you enjoy supporting local music, chances are you’ve seen the music video for the song IO by the talented four-piece band, Inside Out.

The song captures the essence of a Fijian traditional wedding where a man requests a woman’s hand in marriage.

Taking on the role of the leading lady, Heather Marama Vakaosooso, captivated viewers with her dazzling smile and stunning dress, which was designed by her.

Originally from Ucuinavanua, Verata, Tailevu, she is currently a freelance graphic designer/fashion designer, having released her debut collection “Heather” last year.

Ms Vakaosooso says stepping into the realm of music videos was a whole new adventure, however she says she couldn’t have asked for a more exhilarating experience.

“Being featured in the finale piece of my own collection was a dream come true — one of those moments where fashion and music intertwine to create pure magic,” the 32-year-old said.

“It was one of the first videos I’ve ever agreed to be a part of in my modelling career, and I must admit, the nerves were palpable.”

The mother of one said as the cameras rolled, and the music filled the air, her nerves instantly melted away.

“Surrounded by familiar faces, the set buzzed with energy, creativity, and pure joy. It wasn’t nerve-wracking; it was exhilarating.

“And as I watched the final product come to life, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to be a part of something truly special and on top of that to be part of a music video that was shot locally that hit 1 million in just a few weeks.”

Her collection also featured in the music video for the hit song Lauti Au, dress adorned by VT1S artist Liz Vamarazi.

“To see my pieces gracing the big screen in not just one, but three local music videos that are currently making waves, is a feeling beyond words.

“The positive feedback and support pouring in have been nothing short of heartwarming.

“To witness my creations adorning the artists, to see them come to life in the vibrant energy of the music videos — it’s a surreal experience that fills me with immense pride and joy.”

Captivated at a young age by the artistry and passion of fashion design that surrounded her, she later took an interest in fashion, inspiring her to embark on a transformative journey.

At the age of 15, she stumbled into the world of modelling, not knowing it would unravel a profound passion for fashion design within her.

“As I walked down the catwalk, adorned in exquisite garments crafted by talented designers, I found myself captivated by the magic unfolding backstage.

“The meticulous attention to detail, the flurry of activity as designs came to life, and the palpable excitement as models adorned the creations—it all ignited a spark within me.

“As I look back on my journey in the world of fashion, one thing stands out — I’ve lost count of the shows I’ve walked for since I first stepped onto the runway in 2009.

“From Fiji Fashion Week to Wearing Fiji, Bottega Show to POM Fashion Week, and Style Fiji, each runway has left an indelible mark on my heart.”

She said behind every stride, every spotlight, there’s been unwavering support from family and friends who believed in her even when I didn’t believe in heels.

“It was my uncle who spotted a model call in The Fiji Times newspaper and thought I fit the bill perfectly except for the heels part.

“From stumbling in my first pair to strutting confidently on runways worldwide, it’s been a whirlwind of growth and unforgettable moments.

“Flying to the USA for LA Fashion Week, gracing the catwalks of PNG Fashion Week, and even modelling at 30,000ft on the inaugural Nadi-Wellington-Nadi flight — each experience etched into the fabric of my journey.”

Her passion for design and visual communication led her to pursue higher education at Fiji National University, where she received her Certificate IV in Graphics Design, Screen Printing, and Signage.

“With each stitch, each sketch, I found my unique voice taking shape — a blend of elegance and innovation, tradition and modernity.

“From the runway to the design studio, each step has shaped my unique style and approach to design a testament to the transformative power of passion and purpose.”

As the years passed and the shows blurred into a kaleidoscope of memories, she says one thing remains constant — the thrill of the runway, the rush of adrenaline, and the magic of fashion.

Her message to emerging designers and models, is to always believe in yourself and celebrate one’s uniqueness.

She adds above all, whether you’re a designer or a model, remember to stay passionate, persistent, and true to oneself.
