MALOLO has overtaken Serua at the top of the Vodafone Vanua Trophy Western Pool after an impressive 27-12 at Thomson Park in Navua on Saturday.

Going into the match, Serua led the standings with 11 points while Malolo had nine.

The bonus point win saw Malolo move up to 14 points.

Avete Daveta and Vilkame Sayabo scored first half tries for Malolo while Ponipate Naliva scored the lone try for the home side as Malolo led 10-7 at halftime.

Serua hooker Mosese Tikicidre scored early in the second spell to give his side a 12-7 lead but two more tries from Malolo sealed the deal for them.

The match was played under heavy underfoot conditions but both teams tried their best to keep their spectators entertained throughout the 80 minutes.

Under-20

It will be in interesting last two rounds in the Vodafone Vanua Trophy under-20 competition as the race for quarter-final qualification heats up.

Malolo could have sealed a spot in the last eight on Saturday but were shocked by bottom-placed Serua 1514.

Malolo went into the match leading the standings with 11 points while Serua were pinned at the bottom without a point.

The win gives Serua four points and a hope of clinching a spot in the last eight.

Coach Gordon Tabua said the side missed out on the quarter-finals last year but they aimed to get the job done this year.

“We have two more home games left for this year and with home crowd support, I’m sure we will be able to make it to the quarterfinal,” Tabua said.

Serua led 10-nil at halftime.

Serua has matches against Kadavu and Navosa left in the competition.
