Tabadamu to field U21 side at Marist 7s

- By MELI LADDPETER

FOR the first time, the Tabadamu Rugby Club will be fielding an under-21 side for the upcoming Fiji Bitter Marist 7s this weekend.

The club, formed by former national 7s rep Setefano Cakau, is one of the top teams to look out for when the two-day tournament kicks start on Friday.

Team manager Ulaiasi Bolalailai said the main purpose of forming an under-21 side for the club was to develop and nurture young ruggers into players they wanted for their senior side.

“This is all for development for our senior team, and we have had a lot of boys show their interest in joining the side,” he said.

“This is also our first time having an under-21 so it is very exciting, and we are looking forward to competing in the Marist 7s this weekend.”

The tournament this weekend will be the first for the under-21 side, and emotions are high among the players as they gear up to showcase their talent at the biggest local 7s tournament in the country.

There will be a total of 89 teams, with a total of 190 matches set to get underway.

“The boys are all excited and are looking forward to this tournament, which is probably the biggest in the country.”

Both the senior men’s side and their under-21 took part in warmup matches with the Japan Development 7s team at Albert Park yesterday as they prepare for the Marist 7s.

“These warm-up matches are just to prepare our boys for the Marist 7s, for us to see their performance and just add a few finishing touches to their training before game day.”

The side last won the tournament back in 2020, where they defeated Police White 22-19 at the then ANZ Bank Stadium.

“We are expecting a tough tournament this weekend as we know there are a lot of teams coming up looking to have a shot at the title.”
