Ship safety concern
THE Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji has emphasised the critical importance of having ships and machinery onboard in good condition.
It also said ships needed proper and regular maintenance to ensure the safety and wellbeing of passengers and crew, pursuant to the Fiji (Fiji Maritime Code) Regulations 2014.
The reminder comes in the form of a public notice issued recently by MSAF to all ship owners, operators, masters, and officers.
And the authority called for “prompt and urgent compliance” among all concerned.
“All ship owners, operators, masters and officers of ships are required to ensure adequate ventilation for both crew and passengers on board the ship,” MSAF stated.
“Ship owners, operators, masters and officers are mandated to maintain a high standard of housekeeping and general upkeep for all ship facilities for both crew and passengers, including but not limited to, seating arrangements, onboard accommodation (for crew), and washrooms
“It is imperative that owners, operators, masters and officers ensure the continuous operational status of essential machinery on board the ship.”
MSAF said this included but was not limited to, the main engine supply, backup generators, emergency generators and other related machinery.
“Regular maintenance and testing are crucial to ensure their reliability during critical situations.
“Please further note that MSAF is conducting random Flag State inspections of all ships in line with its mandate to ensure that conditions onboard ships are compliant and continually meet safety standards.”
MSAF said it remained committed to ensuring the highest standards of maritime safety and urged all stakeholders to prioritize the wellbeing of persons onboard and the effectiveness of the maritime operations.
