Police confirm reports of drug sales in schools

- By NACANIELI TUILEVUKA

STUDENTS are reportedly selling drugs in schools.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livia Driu confirmed this saying they have received information of these alleged incidents happening at schools in Suva and the West.

Mr Driu said nine students had been found to be in possession of illicit drugs in schools in the Northern Division from last year to date.

“The youngest to be found in possession of illicit drugs in schools is a 14-year-old,” he said.

“While in Lautoka, seven students have been found to be also in possession of illicit drugs and the youngest is also a 14-yearold.”

Responding to queries on the issue from this newspaper, Ministry of Education permanent secretary Selina Kuruleca said they had received similar but unverified reports of students selling drugs in schools.

Ms Kuruleca said they would continue to work with police and other agencies on the issue.

“We will also work with the Ministry of Health, and the Multi Sectoral Committee on Substance Abuse,” she said.

She did not reveal the number of cases received but confirmed the increasing number of incidents.

“In light of the increasing incidents our ministry will be pushing for more counsellors,” she said.

There’s a need for the ministry, she said, to partner with civil societies and faithbased organisations.

“This is just not an issue of education or public health, it is a matter of national interest that requires a comprehensive multi-stakeholder approach.”

She said this measure would ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
