- By MELI LADDPETER

AFTER putting out an outstanding performance in their opening match of the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s yesterday, Kavala Bay Babas head coach Aminio Vula said the side is vying for the title for this year’s competition.

The side defeated the British Royal Navy 7s side 12-7, in a hard-fought battle at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

“Like every other team in this competition, we are here for the title,” Vula said.

“Looking at our pool before the competition started, we knew we were in a tough spot, but the boys were adamant to make their presence known at the game.”

He said they expected a tough battle against the Royal Navy side and was happy with his boys for coming out with a win.

“We knew it would be a tough competition and I thank the boys for going all out against the visitors.”

Vula said winning their first match of the tournament was important because it had set the momentum for the team.

“We will just build from here, go back on our mistakes, and come back stronger for the final day.”

He labelled their defence as an area his side needed to work on as they prepare for the final day of competition which kicks starts this morning.

“Just a few areas in our defence we need to work on, like our standings on the field and how we mark our opponents.

“We also need to improve our ball handling which caused a few errors in our first game against the Royal Navy side.”

The Kadavu-based side features players from Kavala Village and other villages on the island Only two boys in the team are from Suva while the rest of the boys are from Kadavu.
