A sacrifice worth making

- By TALEI MATAIRAKULA

A FAMILY travelled from Suva in the wee hours yesterday just to watch the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men and the Rooster Chicken Fijian Drua women play at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

The Lagivola family departed Suva at 4am yesterday and was part of the huge crowd that turned up and braved the humid Lautoka weather to witness our Drua teams. Adi Eka Lagivola, 14, accompanied by her mother and two siblings, all wore their Drua Tshirts, blending in with a sea of blue.

“We made our way here around 6.30am, we came in the first bus that provides service from Suva to Lautoka,” she said.

“It was a very long, tiring ride but it was a nice experience. This is my first time in Lautoka and my first time to watch the Drua play here.

“Last year my family did not miss a single home game in Suva and I’m happy I get to witness both the men and women in Lautoka.”

Lagivola, whose younger brother is an enthusiastic rugby hopeful, added the trip was worth it. It didn’t look like the Western Division had experienced flooding in the past week as fans showed up hours before the game to cheer on the home teams.

“We are related to Vilive Miramira, we reside here in Lautoka and we just couldn’t miss this game,” supporter Lavenia Rabeci said.

“Our mothers are sisters, we try to attend all the Drua home games and support Mira. He has set a new legacy for our family and we are so happy for him,” said his cousin sister Vani Ditamana.

The heavens opened on the brink of halftime during the men’s Super Rugby Pacific match but spectators, especially those at the ground, stayed put with their umbrellas raised.

“I’m not related to anyone in the team but we always turn up to support them at home. I also use this opportunity to preach and share the word of God,” spectator Mata Vamarasi shared.
