Annoying police escorts

I AM always baffled and very annoyed at almost all occasions when visiting rugby teams and our own national team are “escorted” to/from airport and rugby venues, police escorts find it absolutely essential to “disturb the peace” with their blurting sirens.

It happened on Friday, March 22. When you live close the Queens Rd stretching from the Nadi Airport through Namaka, Martintar, Denarau bypass onwards to Denarau, these needless police escort sirens are most annoying, and absolutely needless.

I share my personal views, on behalf of the silent majority with utmost respect, care and concern.

It is also even more annoying and frustrating when visiting dignitaries are escorted — moreso at night. Piercing and shrilly sounds of escorting police sirens are very disturbing.

Does this occur overseas? Or just here in Nadi?

Water and road woes

THIS week, people living in Kattar Singh Rd in Tacirua have been having daily water cuts.

This is not new as all throughout the year water cuts is an accepted norm.

Last year, I had appealed to the Government and Road Authority through this column to visit Kattar Singh Rd and do something about the road.

The taxi stand on the main road will not send taxis down this road and that reveals how bad my road is. With all the heavy rain we have been getting lately and the continuous water cuts we face daily and the worsening road conditions; life is a challenge out here.

This is not in the interior of Viti Levu or out in the islands but near Suva, the Capital City of Fiji.

Please leaders, do something to show you care about Fijians living in such conditions.

Labasa women commended!

AFTER creating history by qualifying for the semis of the OFC Women’s Champions League, the Labasa women’s side touched hearts with their accomplishment.

Labasa met Hekari in a tough battle on Wednesday and conceded two goals in extra time to bid the competition goodbye.

However, despite the loss, master Roneel Ram, who is the coach, and the girls, who are part of this history of making the semis for the first time, must be commended for this achievement which is worth celebrating.

It motivates the men’s team, which has yet to play in the OFC Champions League.

To the Lions, set focus on that spot! A big vinaka vakalevu to the ladies from the Friendly North for doing Labasa proud!

Reading habit

THE Fiji Times news encouraging children to read, by Rotary Club (FT 19/3), with empowering messages to all those responsible should encourage children to read from an early stage.

It’s a family affair. Reading and storytelling is always rewarding, creative and relaxing.

I have been reading this daily newspaper from an early stage from the 1950s, entertaining my girmitya grandmother with news.

In return she would tell stories that I have passed on to my children and grandchildren.

I have read in reader’s digest that Queen Elizabeth always read and wrote before going to bed.

It is a lifetime habit that never dies.

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Begin your day with the 154 year old daily newspaper The Fiji Times.

I feel that every school should have a copy.

Old reading habits never die. TAHIR ALI
