Making an impact
WOMEN have the potential to make impactful contributions to the tech industry and help reshape the future of technology.
ACTON Fiji managing director Shobha Reddy shared this sentiment at the 3rd WIN Convention that ended in Suva last Saturday.
Ms Reddy highlighted the story of English mathematician and writer Ada Lovelace — regarded as the world’s first computer programer in the 19th Century.
She said Ms Ada’s visionary insights laid the foundation for modern computing.
“Fast forward to the present day and we have trailblazers like Sheryl Sandberg, served as chief operating officer of Facebook for 14 years. And we don’t have to look that far back in history or on the global front — there are many inspirational female tech leaders in the Pacific and here in our beloved home, some of who are sitting here with me today and some out there in the audience,” Ms Reddy said.
“These women are not just exceptional individuals. They represent a movement — a movement towards inclusivity, diversity, and empowerment in the tech industry.
“But they cannot do it alone. Every one of us have a role to play in fostering an environment where women feel welcome and supported in pursuing their tech dreams.”
Ms Reddy suggested an early start to empower women to chase their tech dreams.
She said young girls must be encouraged to explore their interests in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects from a young age.
“Secondly, we need to create inclusive workplaces that value diversity and provide equal opportunities for all. This means combating unconscious bias in recruitment and promotion processes, offering mentorship and professional development programs for women, and fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity.”
She added women’s achievements in tech should be celebrated.
“Representation matters. When young girls see women succeeding in the tech industry, they are inspired to believe that they can do it too.”
She said empowered women chasing their tech dreams could become role models for the upcoming generation of innovators.
