THE annual Sanatan Inter District Championsh­ip will be hosted by Labasa for the first time.

Organised by the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji’s Sports Wing, teams from around Fiji will be competing in football, netball, golf and snooker at the 62nd edition of the convention scheduled for this Easter weekend.

Sports Wing senior vice-president Salendra Nand said the main competitio­n would be football.

“We have 22 teams in the men’s open category while there will be 10 teams in the masters division. Rewa is the defending champions of the open category while Nasinu will defend the masters title,” Nand said.

He added apart from sports, there will be cultural programs in the evenings.

“Games begin on Friday morning and we have the Naari Sabha program on the first night. Saturday will be youth night while the artist night is scheduled for Sunday.”

Games will be played at grounds in Labasa Sangam College, Bethel Primary and at Subrail Park.

The open grade winner will receive $2000, while the runner-up gets $1000.

In the masters division, the winner gets $1000 while the runner-up walks away $500 richer.

Open grade defending champions Rewa have been preparing well under the watchful eyes of coach Rodicks Singh.

Rewa has the services of district reps Delon Shankar, Nimish Prasad, Shivam Shandil, Ivan Kumar and Ravinesh Karan Singh.

The tournament begins with the first match in the open grade between Ba and Sabeto at 8.30am at Subrail Park on Friday. Sporting events are sponsored by Future Farms and VR Builders.

The semi-finals and final are scheduled for Monday.
