SIXTY-FIVE-YEAROLD Lalita Devi has called on women around the country to utilise the land around them as it will assist them financially.
The lady farmer from Bila, Sigatoka scooped the Women Vegetable Farmer of the Year Award and the Women Farmer for Nadroga/Navosa Province at the first ever National Women in Agriculture Awards Night which was held in Nadi.
With over 40-years of farming experience, Ms Devi highlighted that women can do anything as long as they put their minds into it.
“Anything is possible through hard work and I will continue to strive for excellence and increase my vegetable farming activities on my five-acre land. I urge everyone out there to utilise your land well.”
Meanwhile, Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Vatimi Rayalu, while officiating at the awards night, acknowledged the contribution of women in the agriculture sector as they represent 14 percent of Fiji farmers.
“As of today, 12,084 women farmers are registered in the National Farmers Database. This is an increase from the 11,971 recorded in 2020. According to the 2020 Fiji Agriculture Census Report, women farmers contributed $57.9 million to the total agricultural production value.
Minister Rayalu emphasised that the Coalition Government will continue to work to ensure that women have the opportunities and support they need to participate, lead, and succeed in this amazing sector.
“I would like to commend the efforts of all women in Fiji’s agriculture sector; the women farmers, women exporters, women food processors and not forgetting the trailblazing women officers in the Ministry who are involved in crop extension services, livestock extension, research services, planning, and administration services across the four geographical divisions of Fiji.
“You all have continuously overcome barriers and positioned yourself as key drivers of alleviating poverty by improving food security and livelihoods in the sector and national economy.
“Women in agriculture have existed in the shadows for many years, supporting agriculture without being recognised. We pay tribute to your countless contributions as grandmothers, mothers, daughters, and the important role you play in shaping and strengthening our families, communities, agricultural sector, exports and food businesses.”
“We reaffirm our commitment to equal opportunities for women in agriculture and support your vision and leadership.”
