ON Sunday, January 2, 2005, The Fiji Times provided a peek into the life of Kalivati Gerald Meehan, an Australian professional boxer of Fijian descent.

Kalivati was visiting his family when he was interviewed.

Upon arrival the 35-year-old was greeted with traditional ceremonies and familial embrace at Taviya Village on Ovalau, where he was spending the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Affectionately known as Kali among his friends and family, he travelled to Fiji not only to unwind after a demanding year of boxing but also to reconnect with his roots and introduce his three sons — Matthew Lois, Willie Pela, and Isaac Kali Junior — to their Fijian heritage.

“This year was a very busy year for us, especially while preparing for my two fights in the US so I thought I should bring the family to come and enjoy the festive season in the village,” he said.

Despite facing setbacks in his fights, particularly the disputed decision against Lamon Brewster for the WBA title, Kalivati remained determined to reclaim his status as a champion.

“I was away from home, for almost the entire year when training in America and it was not easy for me.

“Now I just want to relax and concentrate on my next move.”

Amidst the festivities, Kalivati found solace in the familiar rhythms of village life, according to The Fiji Times.

From early morning runs up the hills of Taviya to tending the farm with family members, he embraced the simplicity and serenity of his surroundings.

Despite the physical and emotional toll of his bouts, Kalivati’s spirit remained unyielding, fuelled by his dream of winning a world title, as he states “I still have that dream to win a world title and I aim to achieve it before I retire from the game.”

It also stated that as he traversed the streets of Levuka, the support of his fellow Fijians served as a testament to his enduring legacy.

Everywhere he went, well-wishers approached him, expressing their belief that he was unfairly judged in his fights.

In Taviya, his homecoming was met with an outpouring of affection, with villagers lining the streets, singing, and waving banners in celebration of their local hero.

For Kalivati Meehan, coming home to Fiji was not just a chance to relax but a reaffirmation of his identity and purpose.

According to The Fiji Times, as Kali prepared to return to Australia with his family, he cherished the moments spent reconnecting with his roots and drawing strength from the love and support of his community.

This article captures the essence of Kalivati Meehan’s journey — a testament to resilience, determination, and the enduring bonds of family and community.
