Nationals postponed

- By MELI LADDPETER

THE LC Open Nationals scheduled for this weekend have been postponed because of flooding in the Western Division and a water outage in the Central Division.

This was confirmed by Fiji Swimming technical consultant Trisa Cheer Dunn who stressed on the importance of the safety of all swimmers in the competition.

“The reason for this national being postponed is because of the flooding in the Western Division.

“We don’t want to take any risk, making this another reason why we cannot have the competition here in the Western Division,” she said. “And for the Aquatics pool in Suva, we cannot have the tournament this weekend because there is a water shortage and the water levels in the pool get affected when the water pumps are being used.”

However, she said the competition would be held next weekend should there be no other issues with the weather or water shortage.

“Right now, we have moved the competition to next weekend, but we will have to wait and see if things get better.”

The three-day competition has now been cut down to a one-day competition to give Fiji Swimming selectors time to select the national squad for the upcoming Oceania Swimming Championships in Australia next month.

“We have very little time left before the Oceania so that is why we have opted for the one-day event. “If we have the three-day event, our selection process will be longer because there are other things we will have to get done for the Oceania.

“So we will just have all the finals for our swimmers on that one day before we select our team the following week.”
