Unsung heroes

-

IN the complex world of healthcare, the spotlight shines brightest on doctors as they are at the forefront of medical battles.

However, behind the scenes, a silent force works tirelessly, day and night, to ensure the smooth operation of hospitals and clinics and the comfort of patients. They are the nurses and other medical staff members such as those in medical laboratory and imaging, physiotherapy, pharmacy departments to name a few. These are the unsung heroes of healthcare whose dedication, sacrifice and resilience deserve heartfelt appreciation and recognition.

Often, people are critical about the services provided by nurses and other healthcare workers, leading to a negative perception of these dedicated medical professionals.

People forget that these medical staff members work gruelling shifts, sacrificing personal time and comfort. Working overtime is the norm rather than an exception. Breaks and lunchtimes become a luxury as the work is too demanding to allow for a pause. And if they dare to take a moment to rest, someone will take a picture and share it online, saying they’re wasting time. People don’t realise that the staff members have their own personal struggles and challenges. They might be grieving for a family member, or concerned about their parents, or struggling to pay their bills. They might have had an argument with their spouse. Regardless of their personal situations, they’re expected to remain calm, composed and serve others with a smile.

It’s high time we acknowledge the invaluable contributions of nurses and medical support staff. Their dedication, sacrifice and resilience form the backbone of our healthcare system.

So, next time you meet a nurse or medical support staff member, spare a moment to thank them. Your words of appreciation could brighten their day and inspire them to keep providing excellent care. Let’s recognise these heroes who work tirelessly to keep us safe and healthy. They truly deserve our respect and admiration.
