Also, they need to consult widely among the Banaban communities and collaborate closely with the villagers, elders and diverse groups on Rabi – Banaban Human Rights Defenders Network co-ordinator Rae Bainteiti

THE Banaban Human Rights Defenders Network believes any further delay of the Rabi Island Council elections would erode democratic principles.

Network co-ordinator Rae Bainteiti said the Government must promptly announce election dates and make the necessary budgetary allocation.

“Also, they need to consult widely among the Banaban communities and collaborate closely with the villagers, elders and diverse groups on Rabi,” Mr Bainteiti said.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced in Parliament that council elections would be held, however, he did not give a timeframe.

Mr Rabuka said this would complete the naturalisation process for Rabi and Kioa islanders.

“At the same time, we will urgently address the socioeconomic needs of the Melanesian vasu-i-Taukei community,” the Prime Minister said.

In response, Mr Bainteiti claimed the council’s role had been subsumed by Rabi administrator Jacob Iakoba Karutake for 11 years.

“While we appreciate the commitment to good governance and community empowerment, we emphasise the critical need for immediate action regarding the Banaban community’s rights and representation,” Mr Bainteiti said.

However, Mr Karutake said he was just doing his job on the island.

“We are just enforcing our policies,” he said.

Mr Karutake welcomed the news of the council elections being held soon.

“This is all part of the Government’s plan to get back the councils,” he said, adding he did not have any problem with the conduct of council elections.
