Quark / 18 septembre - 7 novembre 2014 Quark, nouvel espace genevois dédié aux artistes émergents et organisatrice du prix éponyme, consacre une exposition personnelle à son troisième lauréat 2014: Gilles Furtwängler. L’artiste lausannois ouvre son exposition avec un texte en vitrine qui apostrophe le public – « Chérie, Chéri, je m’adresse à toi. La notion de compassion est fondamentale. L’interprétation c’est le bien. Ouvrez la fosse aux chips » – et affirme un ensemble de considérations articulant croyance et doute. Dressé à l’entrée de la première salle, un coussin-drapeau sur lequel figure l’union sémantique : « CHACAL/ ESPRIT » revendique la place accordée au double sens. La forme autoritaire du drapeau, ici domestiquée, rythme l’exposition et nous oriente progressivement vers une peinture de textes monumentale et vibratoire. Puisant dans sa vie quotidienne des mots et des phrases qu’il isole et recompose, l’artiste donne à voir, à lire ou à entendre des images poétiques, se confrontant chaque fois à de nouveaux contextes. Les mots apparaissent tour à tour sous forme de peintures murales, d’objets ou de lectures. Son écriture, tendue et nerveuse, travaille sans cesse les limites du signifiant et de l’espace. Elle active, de manière elliptique, des sujets à caractère politique, critique ou existentiel, communément partagés (l’amour, la guerre, le devenir). Par la diversité des sources librement convoquées, elle exclut les catégorisations sociales et culturelles. Parsemés d’évocations érotiques et de mots tendres, ses textes s’adressent à la profondeur de notre être. Ils dessinent un paysage diffracté où retentissent des « effets de réel », parfois acides, absurdes ou vulgaires, qui nous empêchent de somnoler et nous autorisent à spéculer sur la véritable position d’un « je » décomplexé. Quark, a new Geneva art space for emerging artists and the organizer of an eponymous prize, is holding a show by its third prizewinner in 2014, Gilles Furtwängler. This artist from Lausanne starts with a French text under glass addressed to visitors: “Dear visitor, I’m speaking to you. Compassion is a fundamental concept. Interpretation is the good. Open the pit to the chips.” It states an ensemble of considerations articulating belief and doubt. Hanging at the entrance to the first room a flag/cushion emblazoned with the conjunction “Chacal/Esprit) (Jackal/Spirit, or possibly “Each has the spirit”) emphasizes the centrality of ambiguity in this event. The authoritarian figure of the flag, here domesticated, recurs throughout and gradually orients us toward a monumental, vibrating text painting. Selecting words and phrases from his own daily life and then isolating and recomposing them, this artist shows us, or lets us read or understand, poetic images that constantly clash with new contexts. The words are given as wall paintings, objects and readings. His tense and nervous writing ceaselessly tests the limits of meaning and space. In an elliptical manner it activates widely shared political, critical and existential issues such as love, war and the future. The diversity of the sources so freely invoked avoids social and cultural categorization. Strewn with erotic evocations and terms of endearment, the texts are addressed to our deepest selves. They sketch out a diffracted landscape filled with reverberations of “effects of reality,” sometimes acidic, absurd or vulgar, that keep us from dozing off and permit us to speculate about the real position of a self freed of complexes.
