Lights, Action, Gendarmes Lumière ! Action ! Gendarmes

The Musée de la gendarmerie nationale in Melun is holding its fifth temporary exhibition which also coincides with the fifth anniversary of the museum which is devoted to the National Gendarmerie of France, the celebrated military corps.

An instructive and entertaining exhibition entitled from Cruchot to Marleau, the Gendarmes Steal the Limelight, takes a look at the roles gendarmes have played in film and television over the years, from extras, to walk ons to heroes. Through videos, photograms and accessories the show takes a look at the national institution that is the Gendarmerie, its representation on the screen and the evolution of that representation.

From Cruchot, incarnated by Louis de Funès in the successful The Troops of Saint Tropez series of six films in the 1960s, 1970s and winding up in 1982 to Captain Marleau, the woman gendarme of the popular television series that was originally broadcast from 2015 to 2018, the public can discover how the gendarmes have stolen the on screen limelight. A path of stars leads the visitors into the exhibition where five major themes are explored: the gendarme's role as the eternal extra, an ambivalent figure of authority, an increasingly recognized expert, between darkness and light and series about women gendarmes.

In the heart of the exhibition space is a movie theatre projecting extracts from various films and television shows. Round tables, encounters, conferences and game books round out the program.

The charming town of Melun is the historic capital of the Capetian kings of France. It sits on the Seine and offers a pleasant place to stroll with its pedestrian downtown. Located in the heart of the Brie region, the town has also given its name to the flavorful cheese, the Brie of Melun. Normally an event is held in honor of the cheese on the first Saturday of October with tastings, competitions and entertainment.

Through to February 28th, 2021.
