Weingut Wieninger

One of the most beautiful wineries of Vienna

-

The familial Weingut Wieninger vineyard is located in Vienna (Austria) and belongs to Fritz Wieninger. It should be noted that Vienna is the only world capital producing significant quantities of wine within its city limits. This vineyard is extends over 700 hectares. They are mainly cultivated in white grapes (Weissburgunder, Grüner

Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc,

Riesling, Gelber Muskateller) and a bit in red grapes. Wine growing has a long tradition in Vienna… According to historians wine has been made here since Roman times.

Fritz Wieninger is very impassioned by winemaking and above all by Vienna terroirs. He opened his wine-cellar 20 years ago. Today the Weigut Wieninger extends across 52 hectares of vines. This vineyard is partly around the winery, in the north of Vienna, and some others are across the Danube river in the north-west. The most renowned winegrowing areas are Nußberg and Bisamberg.

Because of the continental climate, the region is influenced by different area floors, and a microclimate is created by the Danube river. All of these characteristics have an impact on the production : « all is possible in Vienna » say Fritz Wieninger. The Wieninger domain is known throughout Austria for the quality of their white wines but also for its vintages fermented in oak barrels, developed throughout the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Pinot Noir under the « Gran select » title.

Why your terroir is so specific?

Weingut Wieninger cultivates vineyards on the Bisamberg and on the Nussberg, which - separated by the Danube river - features different soils and different climates. The winery’s comprehensive range of wines reflects these differences. The winery is done by biodynamic farming.

A variety of vineyard sites within a contained area defines the wine region of Vienna. Geologically, the Bisamberg consists of light, sandy loess. This soil is highly water -permeable and the subsoils are extremely calcareous.

The Nussberg is comprised of shell limestone and weathered limestone soils with subsoil of limestone rocks. The limestone content is extremely high, something that is very positive for the wine’s quality. Because of the heavy soil with a high limestone content, the wines of the Nussberg tend to have a creamy texture and darker fruit tones along with moderate acidity and a very pronounced minerality. I’m really passionate about my terroir, about the Nussberg…

What is your signature/imprint? There is an interplay between the soil, the vineyard sites and the microclimate of the Vienna Basin - and all this, I try to express in my wines.

What is wine to you ? What does it represent?

The most beautiful thing is to see how the wine develops. I realise the picture that I have in my head - which is harmony with soil, climate and variety. Each wine is also an expression of the winemaker’s personality and has a lot to do with emotion and individuality.

Describe your passion for wine in 3 words… Urban, Viennese and Pleasure

Do you have any future projects ?

Yes currently we are working with some winemakers on a project of creation a classification ‘Erste Lage’ und ‘Grosse Lage’. We want to show the quality of our production and help the development of Vienna wines’ notoriety in the world.
