Poggio Mandorlo

A young and promising Tuscan winery !

-

Poggio Mandorlo is a young Tuscany wine estate located in Seggiano, in the heart of the Maremma region, at the foot of the extinct Volcano Monte Amiata. It is situated inside the Montecucco DOCG area, at the crossroads of Val d’Orcia and the outposts of Maremmas’ hilly region.

The Poggio Mandorlo Project began as a dream of longtime friends Roberto Borra, Felice Colarieti, Giuseppe Bianconi and Fabio Binacchi with the common goal of promoting their land/terroir and region. In 2001 they decided to make this wine dream a reality.

This property extends over 94 acres.30 acres are planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. Poggio Mandorlo also has approximately 3 acres of olive groves. Its terroir is a complex blend of clay and limestone marl soil, rich in quartz and flint, with a predominant content of tufa and galestro in the higher slope levels.

V.d.V.: Where come from the name of the winery « Poggiomandorlo » ?

When we first stepped into our estate there was nothing but a solitary flowering almond tree at the entrance. When planting vines, we were undecided whether to remove or to keep the almond tree there.

Finaly, we kept it and that’s how we came up with the name Poggiomandorlo. In italian that means «The Hillock of the Almond Tree.»

V.d.V.: Why did you to create your winery (why in your area and not in an other place) and make your own wine ?

We went there in 2000 for the first time for a weekend’s holiday to Tuscany. We stayed in a beautiful place just in front of Sant’Antimo Abbey. We immediately fell in love with those hills and countryside. We went back home inspired by that area rich in history, art, fantastic views and wine.A dream started taking shape.

We talked to three friends of ours with the same passion for the Land of Tuscany and for wine. After some months we purchased the land at the foot of the extinct volcano Monte Amiata, in the Montecucco DOC area.

Poggiomandorlo is the dream of four long time friends with the common goal of exploring and promoting that area with its valleys, mountains and generous volcanic soil. We took the challenge of growing and producing our own wine firmly convinced that that territory would soon become an important area in Italian viticulture producing elegant wines with strong personality.

V.d.V.: What is your signature? I mean what allows us to recognize your wines in blind tasting? Poggiomandorlo includes a selection of four different red wines. Il Guardiano and La Querce - terroir wines are defined by a remarkable freshness and a mineral sensation coming from our particular soil/terroir that is characterized by the extinct volcano Amiata.

Concerning Le Ombre and Il Poggiomandorlo - a blend of international grapes (Merlot and Cabernet Franc) enriched by a bit of Sangiovese. They are extremely elegant with a velvet feel and a perfectly balanced pseudo-warm sensation
