Socré

A family history that has lasted for over 4 generations !

- Thanks to Marco Piacentino and his wife for their warm welcome. - J.C.C.

Socré a small Italian family property and more precisely from Piemont. It is located in the town of Tre Stelle, in Barbaresco Even though the vineyard has existed for over 140 years, the first vintage bottled under the name of Socré only dates back to 1999.

The vineyard covers a little over 4 hectares, mainly planted with Nebbiolo and located on the Barbaresco vintages : Roncaglie in Barbaresco, Pajoré in Treiso and Comune di Neive. Some small plots are also dedicated to Merlot, Freisa, Barbera, Dolcetto and Chardonnay. Each year the property produces on average 50,000 bottles, all vintages combined.

More recently, the property also acquired 6 hectares of vines on Dogliani, planted in white.

Let’s go together to meet Marco Piacentino, winemaker and owner of Socré

Where does the name Socré come from ?

Marco Piacentino: It was always the name of this farm, even long before my grandfather bought it. In Piedmontese it means the man who makes the hooves. I guess formerly a clog maker lived here.

Why did you choose to become a winemaker ?

M.P.: It is by choice but also by duty. My grandfather, my mother ... my whole family was born here in the region. They have always worked the land. However, it was not until 1869 that my grandfather acquired this estate. My parents took care of the vineyard, but when they wanted to retire the issue of continuity in was made. I come from a family of three brothers and even though my first job is to be an architect I was the only one who had an agricultural streak.

For a long time my family produced grapes for sale to large local houses but when I took over the property in 1999 I started to change that. Before that the only wines we made were for the family ( Dolcetto and Barbera). Over time I gained experience, know-how but I also restructured the vineyard. I sold some plots and acquired others. I also invested in the production tools by buying equipment and expanding the cellar.

If you had to define what wine represents in your life, what would you say ?

M.P.: Wine is my life, my DNA. Nothing would be possible without wine in my life, my story would be radically different. The wine is brilliant, it is never boring or off-putting…

What is the signature of Socré wines ? What makes it possible to recognize them in tasting ?

M.P.: I would say it is delicacy and elegance. Mine are never hard, powerful or tannic simply because I do not like this kind of wine. They also offer roundness, a beautiful racy elegance and very silky tannins.

Do you have any projects in particular Socré ?

M.P.: Currently I am testing sparkling wines, using the Champagne method. I also bought a large vineyard in Dogliani for that. I would like to make a nice sparkling wine, well balanced, fresh and offering a nice finesse of bubble. Ideally I would like a zero dosage.

I taste my red wines all day long, whether with professionals or amateurs. Being able to drink bubbles at the end of the day or between tastings is what I need !
