Yogi Adityanath
In India, the Bharatiya Janata Party named Yogi Adityanath, a Hindu hard-liner, as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh (UP), the country’s most populous and politically significant state, where PM Modi’s party scored an overwhelming victory in a ballot to pick the next state government last month. Adityanath, a five-term MP who appears in public in the saffron robes worn by Hindu priests, is in charge of a territory that is home to some 220 million people — around 40 million of whom are minority Muslims.
