Irish in the European Union
Irish became an official language of the European Union on 1 January 2007. Since then, the European Parliament has been struggling to recruit interpreters with the appropriate language skills. “There are not enough interpreters on the Irish market,” said a senior Parliament official recently. Because of recruitment concerns, temporary derogations were put in place from 2007 to 2016 in order to limit the amount of translation and interpretation needed. Irish should become a full working language of the EU from January 2022.
