End of a long dispute

-

On June 12th, Greece and the Republic of Macedonia announced that they finally came to an agreement regarding the name of the latter country: it will be renamed “North Macedonia.” Both countries had been arguing over this for nearly 30 years. Greece, which has a province called Macedonia, tried to stop the Republic of Macedonia from adopting this name when Yugoslavia broke up in 1991, claiming that it hid territorial claims against the Greek province. Thanks to this agreement, Macedonia will most likely be allowed to join the European Union and NATO, as its progress has been blocked by Greece. dispute querelle, différend / to come, came, come to an agreement parvenir à un accord / latter second, dernier (de deux) / to argue se quereller, se disputer / to break, broke, broken up ici, éclater / to claim affirmer / territorial claims revendications territoriales / NATO = North Atlantic Treaty Organization, OTAN.
