TRUMP SPACE FORCE
US president Donald Trump has ordered the Defence Department to create a new branch of the military: a ‘space force’. “Our destiny beyond the Earth is not only a matter of national identity but a matter of national security […] We must have American dominance in space,” he said, adding that he didn’t want China, Russia and other countries leading the United States. The main missions of this new branch would include “establishing a long-term presence, expanding the US economy, and building the foundation for the eventual mission to Mars.” Currently, the US Air Force, led by General David Goldfein, oversees most space-related military activities. Goldfein was opposed to the creation of this branch when Trump first evoked the idea last year.
