Last month, the activist group De Bovengrondse plastered new signs on 43 streets, in 11 cities throughout the Netherlands, to pay tribute to prominent women in the arts, mathematics, politics, sports and television. The new street signs have been placed beneath the originals by about 30 activists, and honour, among many others, Beyoncé and Suze Groeneweg — the first woman elected into the Dutch parliament. The movement was inspired by a study published by a news website, showing that 88% of the streets in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Groningen were named after men. to plaster placarder, afficher / sign panneau / to pay, paid, paid tribute to rendre hommage à / prominent éminent, important.
