Last month, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the creation of a new Oscar category to appear alongside the mythic “Best Picture:” the “achievement in popular film”. This new category, set to launch at next February’s awards ceremony, will reward blockbusters. This decision was seen as an attempt to get more viewers to watch the annual ceremony, whose television ratings have fallen over the last years.
