Jim Henson
Origins
He was born in Greenville, Mississippi, in 1936. Puppets were already on television in the late forties with the likes of Burr Tillstrom and Bil Baird. Henson started making his first puppets in high school.

Not just for kids
Jim Henson and his future wife Jane created Sam and Friends in 1955. The forerunners to The Muppets were made for adults. They appeared in a short-form television series, then in late night talk shows, like the famous Ed Sullivan show, and advertisements in the 1960s.

Foam
Henson holds a patent for one of his first creations: a not-so-friendly googly-eyed puppet. Patented in 1959, Henson created the doll while studying applied arts at the University of Maryland. Unlike many puppets created during the time, Henson used foam rubber covered in fabric.
This allowed characters to express more emotion than conventional wooden puppets.

The pioneer
He perfected and invented many techniques, including a monitor feedback system that allowed puppeteers to see exactly what viewers were seeing at home to enhance interaction with the audience. Jim Henson founded a special and visual effects company, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, in 1979, which continues to create ground-breaking visual effects.

Walk of Fame
Henson has been honoured both for his own achievements and for those of Kermit the Frog on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Only three other people have received this honour: Walt Disney in his own name and that of Mickey Mouse; Mel Blanc as both himself and his incarnation as Bugs Bunny; and Mike Myers as himself and as Shrek.
