Buttigieg can be pronounced “boot -edge-edge”, “buddha -judge”, “boot-a- judge” or “boo -tuh-judge”. Buttigieg’s father, Joseph, immigrated to the United States from Malta. Buttigieg roughly translates to “lord of the poultry”.

Political life
From 2012 to 2020, he was the Mayor of South Bend, Indiana. In 2013, he released the Vacant & Abandoned Properties Task Force Report, which called for 1,000 abandoned houses to be addressed in 1,000 days. The goal was met in September 2015 with over 1,000 homes being demolished or refurbished.

A Patriot
A graduate of Harvard University and an Oxford Rhodes Scholar, Buttigieg enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve in 2009. He became a lieutenant when he was deployed to Afghanistan, where he took part in the Afghanistan Threat Finance Cell (ATFC), which aimed to disrupt the financial systems of terrorist organizations. He speaks eight languages: English, Norwegian, Spanish, Italian, Maltese, Arabic, Dari and French.

Coming out
If elected, Buttigieg would be the nation’s first gay president. He came out as gay in an essay for the local paper, the South Bend Tribune. Buttigieg met his husband, Chasten Glezman, on a dating app in 2015 and married him in 2018.

After being criticised for accepting donations for his presidential campaign from registered lobbyists, he announced he would refund the contributions he had received. He also released a list of nine clients he worked for during his time at a global management consulting firm, McKinsey & Company.
