Julie Andrews

She was born Julia Wells in Surrey in 1935 to an adoring father, Ted Wells, and a somewhat erratic mother, Barbara Morris, a pianist. Her actual conception was the result of an affair her mother had with a family friend, which she told her daughter about in 1950. Her parents split up when she was young and Andrews moved with her mother and new stepfather, Ted Andrews, a vaudevillian who was alcoholic and sometimes violent. Andrews later revealed he tried to get into her bed, resulting in her putting a lock on her bedroom door.

Early beginnings
With her extraordinary clear soprano voice, she became the family’s breadwinner and worked relentlessly, keeping the family afloat. She would stand on a beer crate to sing into the microphone alongside her parents. In 1948, at just 13, she became the youngest solo performer ever to be seen in a Royal Command Variety Performance.

From the UK to Broadway
At 19, she made her Broadway début in The Boy Friend before landing the lead rôle of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, and from there, it was a mere hop to Hollywood – although not, notoriously, into the movie of My Fair Lady, as the film’s producer, Jack Warner, decided Andrews wasn’t famous enough. He replaced her with Audrey Hepburn.

Losing her voice
After decades of success both on stage and screen, she was forced to interrupt a Broadway run of Victor/ Victoria having developed hoarseness in her voice. An operation to remove non-cancerous nodules caused permanent damage to her voice.

Helping children
While she has also appeared in more adult roles, Andrews has devoted a significant part of her life to improving the lives of children.
