Georges Floyd

-

On May 25th, Georges Floyd was abducted by a policeman who knelt on his neck, ignoring his pleading: "I can't breathe". In spite of the intervention of several passersby, the 46 year old man was choked to death. A video of the incident was posted on the internet, causing national and international condemnation. Protests have erupted all over the US, rallying once again around the slogan "Black Lives Matter". Georges Floyd is one of the many victims of racial violence in the United-States. In recent decades, reports of unarmed African-American men being unfairly killed by the police have appeared all too often in the news. When trialled for murder, the accused often escape the charges or merely face minor prison sentences. This time, the mayor of Minneapolis has pledged that criminal charges will be levied against the policeman. to kneel, knelt, knelt on sth ici, écraser qqch avec son genou / to plead implorer, supplier / passersby passant / to be choked to death décéder par étouffement / protest manifestation / to erupt éclater (fig.) / to rally around se mobiliser autour de / Black Lives Matter («la vie des Noirs compte») mouvement dénonçant les violences policières à l’encontre des Afro-Américains / report signalement / to be trialed passer devant le juge, être jugé / murder meurtre / charge (chef d’) accusation / merely simplement / to face ici, risquer, s’exposer à / sentence peine, condamnation / mayor maire / to pledge promettre, s’engager à / to levy charges against sb inculper qqn.
