In Nigeria, women are uniting under the hashtag #wearetired to protest against sexual assault. Their campaign has started after the death of Uwavera Omowuza, a young woman who was murdered after being raped. Her fate represents a much bigger battle: a survey published last year suggests that one every three girls living in Nigeria could have experienced at least one form of sexual assault before they reach age 25. Many Nigerians denounce a legal system that often blames victims and doesn’t take proper legal action regarding rape. In 2017, nearly 3,500 cases of sexual assault were reported to the police – but none of them led to a conviction.
