Dans le domaine de l’automobile, et plus précisément de « l’électrique » vers lequel on s’oriente de plus en plus aujourd’hui en mettant en avant son aspect écologique, c’était notre devoir d’essayer quelques-unes des nouveautés du marché dans cette catégorie. Partons d’un constat : si le côté zéro émission de CO2 est notre première préoccupation, avec notre magazine qui parle de montagne et de neige, nous devons nous poser la question de comment l’électricité est produite ; car c’est en n’ utilisant que les énergies renouvelables pour les charger que ces véhicules seront vraiment « propres », et on en est encore loin.

Deuxième problème : l’autonomie et les bornes de recharge. Si la première s’améliore année après année, avec des « range » dépassant les 500 km , le problème des stations de recharge à haute puissance est loin d’être résolu.

On en a fait l’amer constat lors de l’essai longue distance avec le Hyundai Kona entre Genève et Bordeaux. Environ 700 km de distance, une autonomie d’environ 400 km ; on s’était dit : « facile ! juste un arrêt pour une recharge sur l’autoroute à hauteur de Clermont-Ferrand et le tour est joué ! » Sauf que, contrairement à ce qu’affirme leur site internet, le réseau de recharge d’EDF, multinationale française de l’électricité, a été arrêté à 90% . Pratiquement plus aucune borne de recharge sur le réseau autoroutier français. À partir de là, on a donc galéré pour trouver une borne de recharge qui fonctionnait. Sortie de l’autoroute, route nationale… et c’est grâce au geste amical d’un concessionnaire Peugeot qu’on est arrivé à recharger. Résultat : aux 9 heures de voyage prévues initialement, se sont ajoutées 5 heures et beaucoup d’énervement. Seul point positif : Bordeaux possède plusieurs bornes de recharge gratuites et modernes. Ville à prendre comme exemple dans ce domaine.

Tout comme Tesla, avec son réseau à haute capacité et entretenu partout en Europe : lors de notre voyage d’il y a trois ans avec son modèle X entre Genève et la Côte d’Azur, on avait eu aucun problème pour rejoindre notre destination.

Let’s start with an observation: although zero C02 emissions are our primary concern in our magazine, which talks about mountains and snow, we have to ask ourselves how the electricity is produced. This is because vehicles will only be truly “clean” when solely renewable energy is used to charge them, and that is a long way off.

Further issues are range and charging points. Even though range is increasing each year, with some cars exceeding 500 km, the problem of the availability of high power charging points is far from being resolved.

We came to this bitter realisation on a long-distance road test with the Hyundai Kona from Geneva to Bordeaux. At around 700 km distance and with the Kona’s 400 km range, we said: “Piece of cake! Just one stop for a charge on the motorway at Clermont-Ferrand and Bob’s your uncle!” The only thing is that 90% of the charging network owned by EDF, the French multinational electricity corporation, is shut down, contrary to what is stated on their website. There are practically no charging points left on the French motorway network. From there on, we had a really hard time finding a working charging point. We came off the motorway and went on the main road… and thanks to the friendly help of a Peugeot dealer, we managed to recharge the car. Conclusion: five extra hours and a lot of hassle were added to the nine-hour trip originally planned. The only positive point is that Bordeaux has a number of free, modern charging points.

That city is a shining example in this field, just like Tesla with its high-capacity network, maintained throughout Europe. On our journey three years ago with the Model X from Geneva to the French Riviera, we had absolutely no problem in getting to our destination.
