Fabiano Caruana (USA; 25) spielt also das nächste WM-Duell gegen Weltmeister Magnus Carlsen (Norwegen; 27). Und er hat realistische Chancen. Sein Sieg beim jüngsten Kandidatenturnier unterstrich einmal mehr, dass Talent und Potenzial bei ihm enorm sind.

Statistisch gesehen hat indes Carlsen die Nase vorn. Beide trafen bisher insgesamt 52-mal aufeinander. Carlsen verbuchte 21 Siege, Caruana elf, und es gab 20 Remis. Im Detail: klassisches Schach 9 – 5 – 17, Schnellschach 12 – 6 – 3.
