Christine Lagarde, Kristalina Georgieva, and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala are a few of the seasoned female professionals inspiring, through their hard work and accomplishments, millions of young girls around the world who refuse to settle for less and dream big. The recent release of the Woman King movie has served to increase the momentum in advancing gender balance in male-dominated industries.

The aviation sector is one such industry where the contribution of women has been limited; chiefly because of the limited number of females engaged in various aspects of this vast, labour-intensive industry.

IATA’s 25by2025 initiative seeks to create the needed awareness of the need to improve female representation in the aviation industry. Though voluntary, it is a giant initial step to making the aviation industry gender-balanced. With a large number of airlines and industry partners already committing to 25by2025, IATA is paving the way for an industry that recognises female talent and creates opportunities for women in which they can thrive.

Ghana has set the pace in encouraging more women into aviation. There are currently women heading various operational areas of the over 22 scheduled passenger airlines and 7 scheduled cargo operators in Ghana.

In this special October edition of AviationGhana, we seek to inspire the next generation of young females to consider a career in aviation. Experienced professionals, mothers, sisters, and aunties, inspire young girls to dream big, dedicate themselves, and not settle for less. More importantly, it is a call for young girls to look beyond the traditional professions, such as medicine and law, and consider careers in aviation.
