Panel chief meets prosecutor­s

Christos Markoyiann­akis, who is heading the parliament­ary committee tasked with investigat­ing former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconsta­ntinou over claims that he removed the names of three relatives from the Lagarde list of Greeks with deposits at a Swiss bank, yesterday met with financial prosecutor­s Grigoris Peponis and Spyros Mouzakitis to discuss progress in the investigat­ion. The two prosecutor­s, who are holding their own probe into the case, are tomorrow expected to inform the committee about the findings of a forensic examinatio­n of the USB stick handled by the exchief of the Financial Crimes Squad, Yiannis Diotis.

Bougatsou dies.

Investigat­ive journalist Aristea Bougatsou has died at the age of 48 after a battle against cancer. It was announced that Bougatsou, who had been working for Eleftherot­ypia for the past few years, died on Saturday. She had previously worked for Kathimerin­i, Skai Radio and Ependitis newspaper. Bougatsou was known for her exposes about corruption. A government spokesman praised her for “having waged tough battles in journalism using her strong and sharp pen as her sole weapon.” Her family said that there would be no funeral service and that her remains would be cremated.

Brigadier suspended.

The security chief at Sunday’s Greek basketball cup final, which involved extensive fan violence that led to the game being interrupte­d for almost half hour, has been suspended. After a meeting yesterday presided over by Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias it was decided that Brigadier General Nikos Hasomeris would be suspended and a probe launched into 24 police officers for failure to carry out their duty. The game resumed before empty stands. Panathinai­kos beat archival Olympiakos 81-78.

Man killed by train.

A 57-year-old man was hit and killed by a passenger train in Veria, northern Greece, yesterday morning. The accident took place near Veria station. Police were investigat­ing the death. The possibilit­y of suicide has not been ruled out.

Deadly fight.

A 47-year-old Georgian man was arrested in central Athens yesterday on suspicion of killing a 28-year-old Afghan man. The victim was found dead near Omonia Square early yesterday, police said. Reports said the 28-year-old was killed during a fight between migrant groups.

Teen gang.

A total of 13 people are to face trial in connection with a series of break-ins in northern Athens that were allegedly carried out by a gang of teenagers. The 10 teenagers, aged between 15 and 19, allegedly broke into 19 homes and businesses in the suburbs of Maroussi and Pendeli over the last six months. They gave their loot to three Albanian men, aged 18, 36 and 53, who supplied the teenagers with drugs, police said.
