Terror leader refuses to talk

Nikos Maziotis, leader of the Revolution­ary Struggle terrorist group, yesterday said he would not face a prosecutor to give a deposition after being summoned to answer questions over his alleged involvemen­t in an April car bomb outside the Bank of Greece headquarte­rs as well as his arrest following an exchange of fire with police in Monastirak­i, central Athens, in July. In a statement posted on an anti-establishm­ent website yesterday, Maziotis, currently in detention at Diavata Prison, noted that he had never given evidence because he and the urban guerrilla terrorist group have always been “the accusers, not the accused.”

Clinton Initiative.

SYRIZA chief Alexis Tsipras yesterday met with Gianna Angelopoul­os, former head of the Athens 2004 Olympics organizing committee, in view of the Clinton Global Initiative’s Mediterran­ean Conference scheduled to take place in Athens in June 2015. According to a statement released by SYRIZA, Angelopoul­os invited the opposition leader to the conference in her capacity as the event’s founding sponsor. Organized by the Clinton Foundation, the meeting aims to address regional issues, including youth unemployme­nt and social and financial volatility. Last week, Angelopoul­os also met with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to discuss the upcoming event.

Power station.

A fire that broke out at the Ptolemaida thermal power station in northern Greece on Sunday was brought under control yesterday. While officials noted the plant’s control room for the third and fourth units had been destroyed, they added that power supplies were not expected to be affected. No injuries were reported.

Wild mushrooms.

The Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) has advised the public to avoid consuming wild mushrooms following a recent hike in the number of cases of people being poisoned. According to figures released by the country’s Poison Control Center, some 80 to 140 cases of wild mushroom poisoning are recorded in Greece every year. In case of poisoning, EFET advises members of the public to contact the Poison Control Center on 210.779.3777.
