Three held over oil slick
Three people have been arrested in connection to an oil spill in the Thermaic Gulf off Thessaloniki. The spill occurred on Thursday, when the Turkishflagged Ottoman Integrity was unloading crude oil at Hellenic Petroleum’s facility. There was a sudden storm that caused the ship’s moorings to come loose and led to the spill, which was not contained until the next morning due to the adverse weather conditions. Authorities said the spill was more than a kilometer long and 3 meters wide. Special vessels were sent in yesterday morning to clear up the slick. The three men who were taken into custody are the 57-year-old in charge at the ELPE site, the 30-year-old responsible for the unloading of the oil and the 47-year-old tanker captain.
