Skipper in fatal boat crash remanded in custody
The 77-year-old captain of a speedboat that collided with a tourist vessel off the Saronic island of Aegina, killing four people, on August 16 was remanded in custody following a Piraeus court decision yesterday. According to court papers, the judges ruled that the skipper, Thrasyvoulos Lykourezos, failed to alert authorities in time although he was aware that human lives were in danger. The court also ruled that the captain’s transfer to shore following the accident was aimed at facilitating an eventual escape. The 77-year-old turned himself in and was arrested by coast guard officers two-anda-half hours after the crash.
