Tens of local authorities omit figures

As many as 137 municipal authorities, which correspond to 42 percent of all local authorities and 31 percent of the country’s population, have not published their ratified financial reports for 2015, according to a study by the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Review (IOBE) published yesterday.

The report that analyzed the finances of municipal authorities also showed that 18 of them – i.e. 5.5 percent of the total – don’t even have any approved accounting statements for 2011, when local authorities were supposed to do so for the first time.

The regions of the Ionian Islands (71 percent), the Southern Aegean (68 percent), Attica (53 percent) and the Peloponnese (52 percent) rank top among the 13 Greek regions with the highest rates of municipal authorities that have not issued their figures.

IOBE president Takis Athanasopoulos explained yesterday that the publication of the local authorities’ accounting reports is essential to scientifically assess the impact of the changes implemented in recent years with the unification of municipal authorities.
