Mayors discuss rehiring garbage collectors

Giorgos Patoulis, president of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE), yesterday chaired a discussion with KEDE members following a protracted strike by municipal garbage collectors which ended last Thursday after the government and unionists reached a compromise over a jobs dispute. KEDE members discussed the process of rehiring hundreds of municipal workers whose shortterm contracts have either expired or are about to. Two weeks of protest action by the workers saw mountains of trash pile up in Athens and other major Greek cities.
