Greece should not extradite, deport or otherwise facilitate the return of a Tajik opposition activist to Tajikistan, where he faces possible torture or ill-treatment, Human Rights Watch said yesterday. Mirzorakhim Kuzov, a senior leader of the Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan (IRPT), was detained by Greek police at passport control at Athens Airport on Monday as he was in transit after attending a human rights conference in Warsaw, the group said. According to HRW, Kuzov was detained in Athens under an Interpol “red notice” released by Tajik authorities who accuse him of politically motivated extremism. HRW added that the charges brought against Kuzov were “in retaliation for his peaceful political opposition.” Kuzov is being held in the capital’s high-security Korydallos Prison.
