Cabinet appoints two women to head top courts
Accepting the proposal by Justice Minister Konstantinos Tsiaras, the government yesterday named the new heads of the Council of State, the country’s highest body of legal arbitration, and the Supreme Court. Mary Sharp was elected Council of State president, succeeding Athanasios Rantos, who stepped down due to retirement. Sharp has served as Council of State vice president since 2011. At the same time, the vice president of the Supreme Court and president of the Criminal Division, Angeliki Aleiferopoulou, is the new president of the Supreme Court. She succeeds Iosif Tsalaganidis, who has also retired. Aleiferopoulou entered the judiciary in 1979.
