-

Technical Director of the Guyana Wado-Ryu Karate Federation Sensei Winston Dunbar left Guyana yesterday for Ontario, Canada where he will participate in an international training seminar with the Canadian Wado-Ryu Federation. The seminar runs from August 4 to 23. The longstanding Karateka is well respected worldwide and has been involved in the sport since 1967 when he started Shotokan under Dennis Forde Singh.

He later teamed up with Alex Waithe, founder of Wado-Ryu Karate in Guyana and ever since has produced several national and international champions.

The latest champion produced by Dunbar is none other than Professor Ken Danns who won a world championship recently.

Dunbar currently teaches daily at Banks DIH, Mae’s school and Eccles Primary School dojos and conducts private sessions across Guyana. He is also the Technical

Director of the Guyana Sambo and Combat Sambo Federation. In an interview with this publication, Dunbar touched on the recent death of the WadoRyu Grandmaster Giro Ohtsuka, stating that his death was a great loss for Wado Ryu worldwide.

In 2005, Otsuka awarded Dunbar the post of Technical Advisor for Wado-Ryu Karate in Guyana.

The Mocha Arcadia resident was fortunate to train under the Grandmaster in the years 2000 and 2005 and calls those sessions his greatest experiences since taking up the sport.

Dunbar said he intends to work closely with the new Grandmaster Sensei Kazutaka Ohtsuka whom he already met and has a great relationship with.

The Guyana Wado-Ryu Karate Federation headed by its President Sensei Darren Nurse has already dispatched its condolences to the Ohtsuka Family. It has also sent out congratulatory messages to Guyana’s First World Champion Professor Ken Danns.
