-

Vincent Alexander will continue as Chairman of the National Accreditation Council (NAC) for the next two years, the Ministry of the Presidency has announced. On Friday, the Ministry announced in a statement that Cabinet has approved the appointment of members of the NAC for a period of two years.

Alexander, who was appointed to head the NAC last year, has been reappointed chairman. The other members are Winifred James Kippins, of the Association of Caribbean Tertiary Institutions; Archibald Clifton, of the Council of Technical Vocational Education and Training; Sophia Hunte, of the Teaching Service Commission; Clem Duncan, of the Private Sector Commission; Dr Dawn Fox, who is the Minister’s representative; Andrew Grant, of the Department of the Public; Camille Robertson, of the University of Guyana; Jennifer Cumberbatch, of the Ministry of Education and Samantha Alleyne, of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU).

All the members with the exception of Alleyne, who replaces GTU President Mark Lyte on the Council, had been appointed last year.

The Ministry of the Presidency statement noted that the Council is the external quality assurance agency for higher education in Guyana and is legally mandated to register all post-secondary and tertiary institutions operating in Guyana.

It ensures that institutions and programmes accredited and permitted to operate meet or exceed stated educational quality criteria, including appropriately designed course programme structures, adequate resources and learning outcomes and assessment strategies that are at an appropriate level for qualifications awarded.
