Inter-Guiana Games… Shattered backboard forces b/ball match to be rescheduled

-

by Orlando Charles ) (Photos Yesterday’s second male basketball fixture between Guyana and Suriname was rescheduled for today after the glass on one of the backboards was shattered by Suriname’s Xavier Nassy during a warmup dunk.

The incident occurred with less than five minutes remaining in the traditional warmup for the two teams.

Nassy dunked on the ring and held on only for the backboard to crack under his weight in front of the sizeable viewership.

After witnessing the event, discussions were held between the officials of the Suriname and Guyana management teams as well as the referees and representatives of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and it was decided that the match will be rescheduled for this morning.

An old backboard from the previous ring is to be used as the replacement. The final match between the teams will take place this evening.

The incident could serve as an embarrassment to the NSC who recently installed the equipment to the tune of several million dollars for the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) U17 championships held in July.

Meanwhile Suriname clinched the three-match series after their women’s team defeated Guyana women 53-42 to take an unassailable 2-0 lead. Joleen Nyman led the Dutch offence which had nine other scorers with 14 points.

For Guyana, Keneisha Leacock and Jada Mohan scored 13 and 11 points each. The final women’s match is set for today at the same venue.
