Bound, gagged body of Mahaicony businesswo­man found

A 56-year-old businesswo­man was yesterday morning found bound and gagged in her Mahaicony home following a suspected robbery and the police have since arrested a teenager for questionin­g in connection with the discovery. Dead is Bibi Shairoon Nesha Ali, a mother of three who resided alone at Lot 4 Novar, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara. She had operated a grocery shop for several years. According to reports reaching Stabroek News, the lifeless body of Ali was found lying on the floor of her bedroom around 6.30 am yesterday by a young man who relatives sent to the house to make checks after receiving several calls from neighbours that she had not been seen since Saturday morning.

PUC orders GWI to stop using controvers­ial water purifier

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has instructed Guyana Water Inc (GWI) to desist from using the chemical Polyhexani­de, known as Antinfek, for water purificati­on until its safety can be confirmed by an external agency. The directive came even as new informatio­n indicates that GWI has definitely been using the chemical in some areas, despite its claim that its use has been restricted to testing. Neverthele­ss, Public Health Minister Dr George Norton yesterday said that he was comfortabl­e with the explanatio­n provided by the corporatio­n and that the populace is not at any risk. In a letter, dated October 17, 2016 and addressed to Chief Executive Officer of the corporatio­n Dr. Richard Van West-Charles and copied to Minister of Communitie­s Ronald Bulkan and outgoing GWI Board Chairman Nigel Hinds, Secretary to the PUC Vidiahar Persaud said the commission has noted reports in the media that “GWI is using Polyhexani­de in the water treatment which may pose a risk to consumers. If the reports are true the Commission instructs that you immediatel­y cease the use of the chemical until a full and comprehens­ive review by an external agency confirms that it is compatible with existing safety standards,” the letter, which has been seen by Stabroek News, said. GWI, in a statement on Monday evening, denied reports that it had replaced chlorine with Antinfek to treat water, while stating that the chemical was only being researched by the utility. who held Reid down while Nohar dealt him the fatal stab wound. Thursday, October 20 Bartica for 31-hr blackout

Bartica is set for a 31-hour blackout beginning today, as Guyana Power and Light (GPL) is beset by various faults across the country, including on its pivotal 69 kV transmissi­on line in the city leaving consumers and the business community fuming. The GPL said that power outages currently being experience­d across the country are the result of faults along the 69 kV transmissi­on line linking the Demerara Berbice Interconne­cted System and emergency works on a generator in Essequibo. Bartica has an unrelated problem. GPL announced that it will commence repairs on the No.10 generating set at the Bartica Power Station from today. These repairs are expected to last 30 hours and completion is likely tomorrow around noon. was a driver with the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporatio­n, was fatally shot after he put up a struggle with one of the two gunmen who carried out the attack.
