How to make a line graph:

LINE GRAPH

1. Use the data from the table to choose an appropriate scale. All scales start at 0. 2. Draw and label the scale on the vertical axis. The vertical axis is showing the number of books in hundreds. This line runs from north to south. This vertical line is sometimes called the y axis. 3. Draw and label the horizontal axis. The horizontal months of the year. This line runs east to west. This horizontal line is sometimes called the x axis. 4. List the name/abbreviation of each month. 5. Locate the points on the graph to tell the number that corresponds to each month. 6. Connect the points with line segments. 7. Write the title of the line graph.

HISTOGRAM

A histogram is similar to a bar graph. Both are graphical displays that use bars of different heights. There are two major differences between a histogram and a bar graph. One is a type of information that is presented and the way they are drawn.

► A histogram groups numbers into ranges. There are no spaces between the bars.

The histogram above shows the number of persons of different age groups who were at a Mashramani Competition in 2016. Their ages ranged from 1 to 25 years. The ages were put into groups of five. So the graph has five bars.

♦ The horizontal axis of the graph shows the age ranges. ♦ The vertical axis tells how many persons. Study the information presented in the histogram. Now answer the questions in Exercise 1. Exercise 1. 1. Which age range had the most persons? 2. How many persons were between the ages of eleven to fifteen years old? 3. Which age range had the least number of persons? 4. How many persons were sixteen to twenty five years old? 5. Which age group had ten persons? 6. Andrew is seven years of age and his cousin is ten years old. Which age range are they in? 7. Which age range has about twenty five persons? 8. List the numbers along the vertical axis. 9. What would be the next range if the horizontal axis was continued? 10. How many persons are represented on the histogram?
