Camptown in must-win clash against Den Amstel
All roads will lead to the Victoria Ground, East Coast of Demerara today when Ann’s Grove battles Den Amstel and Camptown engages Mahaica Determinators in the Petra Organization/ Limacol football championships.
The opening affair at 18:30hrs will witness Mahaica attempting to seal their place in the elimination round against a struggling Camptown unit.
Fresh off their impressive 3-1 win over Riddim Squad, the Determinators will be led by veteran sharpshooter Delroy Dean, owner of the event’s only hat-trick to date.
Capable support will be provided by Eion Abel, the scorer of two goals thus far while the defensive duties will rest on Captain Shameer Nazir and Devon Harris.
For Camptown, a 0-1 loss to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in their previous fixture has placed a must win emphasis on the impending encounter.
A momentous effort will be required from experienced campaigner Troy Prescod in conjunction with rising stars Jamal Codrington and Jason Williams, if they are to emerge victorious.
The feature affair at 20:30hrs is expected to be a high scoring contest when group-C leader Den Amstel lock horns with second placed Ann’s Grove.
The West Demerara unit sealed their place atop the zone after downing Santos 1-0 in their prior engagement and will look to maintain their perfect record heading into the knockout rounds.
They will be led by the talented cast of Gideon Payne, Kester Jacobs, Travis Hilliman, Andre Hector, Delon Lanferman and Roundel Hutson.
Although only a draw is needed to seal their place in the elimination section, Ann’s Grove will be aiming to end their group campaign on a positive note.
In their previous contest, Ann’s Grove defeated Pouderoyen 2-1, with duo of Ryan Seales and Maxton Adams the difference on the night.
A similar display will be expected from the aforesaid partnership in conjunction with Phillip Williams, Oswald Duke and Navado Denny come kickoff time.
The tourney will resume today at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground in Linden, with home side Eagles battling New Amsterdam United at 19:00hrs and defending champion Milerock engaging Winners Connection in a Linden derby at 21:00hrs. The boxing association of Suriname has confirmed the participation of five of their pugilists for the BrisMac boxing card scheduled for February 19 at the National Gymnasium.
This is according to renowned promoter, Seon Bristol, one-half of the BrisMac Promotion team which will be collaborating with the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) to stage the international fixture.
The USA-based Bristol, who arrived in Guyana Thursday, also told Stabroek Sport yesterday that he is still awaiting confirmation from St. Maarten with regards to their participation.
Bristol, who has been involved in sponsoring and promoting professional and amateur cards locally and overseas, disclosed that he is “very much excited for the continued relationship he shares with the boxing community”.
GBA’s President, Steve Ninvalle mentioned recently that he was heartened by the efforts of the promoters, Bristol and Alford McDonald since the event will be “a bang for us starting the new year.”
Ninvalle noted that the card, which will kick start the 2017 season, “will put some fuel into the developmental drive of amateur boxing in Guyana.”
