Last Week’s Answers Exercise 1

1. A = {12,14,16} 2. B= {2} 3.C = {2, 3,5,7,11,13,17,19} 6. F = {vii, viii, ix, x} 7.L= { } 8. G = {set of five school days} 9. H = {even prime number} 10. J = {three multiples of 100 inclusive} 11. K = {factors of 12} 12. M = {four female names beginning with P} 13. P = { }

Exercise 2

1. Equivalent 2. Equal 3. No relationship 4. Equivalent 5. Equal Hello boys and girls, I know that you all really enjoyed working with sets last week. Were you able to share the exercises with your friends and teachers? This week we will do some more exercises with sets

VENN DIAGRAMS Terms to Remember:

1. Universal Set The Universal Set is denoted by U. It is the set of all the elements that are inside the rectangle.

2. Intersection The intersection of two sets is the set of all members common to both sets.

A ∩ B This is read A intersects B

3. Union The union of sets is a set which combines all the elements that are in both sets, alike and different. A common member is only written once. AU B This is read A union B

4. Subset One set if a subset of another if it is contained in that set. Set A = {2,3,5} Set B = {2,3} Set B Set A

5. Member or Element A set is made up of members or elements A={2,3,4,5,6} Set A has 5 elements or members. 4 is a member of/is an element of/belongs to/is in Set A 4 ∈ Set A

6. Not a Member or Element

This symbol (∉) is read “is not an element of,” “is not a member of,” “is not in,” or “does not belong to.”

A={2,3,4,5,6}

7 is not a member of/is not an element of/does not belong to/is not in Set A

7 ∉ Set A

Exercise 1

1. Give the symbols for each of the following: (i) union (v) member of (ii) subset (vi) does not belong to (iii) intersection (iv) universal

2. U is the set of students on the class C is the set of students who like cherries M is the set of children who like mangoes.

C= {Ann, Pat, Penny, Jane, Jewel}

M = {Pat, Jack, Penny, Shireen}

List the members of the following sets

(a)C ∩ M

(b)C U M

(c)Which of these is true? (a) C M (b) M C (c) C U

Study each of the Venn Diagrams and Answer the questions Exercise 2

1. U=

A = {3,6,9}

B = {3,5,6,7}

Fill the information into the Venn diagram then answer the questions. (i) How many members are in AU B ? (ii) List the members in the set B only. (iii) Which letters are in A∩ B? (iv) List the members in the universal set? (v) How many members are in U?

2. Study the Venn diagram below

true Read the following statements and expressions and state whether they are or false.

(i) The numbers in both sets are 7,15 and 20. (ii) PU Q has 11 members. (iii) U = {nine counting numerals less than 30} (iv) n(P) = 5

3. In a class of 30 children, 20 like to play hop-scotch, 13 like to play jump rope and 7 like to play both hop-scotch and jump rope. How many children do not like neither games?

Complete the Venn Diagram to demonstrate the information above.

4. A total of 40 children were in a school’s choir. The boys sang 5 songs alone while a total of 24 girls sang altogether. 2 boys did not sing.

If the number of girls who sang alone was thrice the number of boys who sang alone, find the value of:

(a).a = ………..

(b).b = ………… .. (c).c = ……………… ..

(d). How many children are in the intersection?

(e) x = ……………… Goodbye boys and girls. Until next week.
